Now if you get lucky whne finishing Emergent Behavior you might be able to modify Curie at a robot station while she is a synth if you don’t wanna use the console, but this bug is very rare. If you get the option though it turns her back into a robot.

No, if you join the Institute nothing happens to Nick. He is still available to use as a companion and it doesn’t appear to effect his standing with you. It will however open up a few passing comments where he’ll query why you’re working for them.
