What is a crabbing snood?
Snoods are just the crabber’s term for a short noose-like contraption with bait attached at the end of it. The basic idea is that the line is run from a boat and setup like so: Unsuspecting crabs.
How long should a crab line be?
Its length is restricted by laws which vary from state to state, but 500 feet is considered a “short” line and 1,000 feet is common. Trot line is usually 1/4” to 1/8” nylon or braided rope, and some crabbers add snoods.
How do you make a crab line?
- Go Traditional: A simple length of string (or paracord) tied around a rock to weight it down (or use a large fishing weight) and then wrapped around bacon, chicken or pork chop works well.
- Safety Rigs: For a couple of pounds, you can buy a hand reel, line, with a weight and netting bag attached to the end.

Menhaden is very plentiful, is relatively inexpensive and is an excellent crab bait. It is said that frozen menhaden catches more crabs than fresh, however frozen does not last as long.
What do you put on a crab line?
Don’t use a hook, choose a line with a small net and a weight attached. Bacon or any fish off-cuts are ideal as bait. Drop your line in the water and wait. We said wait.

Time of day Slack water (the time around high or low tide) is the best time to crab. During slack water, crabs are generally walking around and foraging since they are not getting pushed around by tidal exchange.
What length should a snood be?
In terms of circumference, it can often be tricky to get the perfect length that neither strangles you nor sags down exposing your neck to the bitter chill. We have found the ideal length to be around the 60-65cm / 25″ mark.
