Your daily intake of calories should be approximately 3000 – 3500 calories, to take into account the heavy bag you will be carrying and the amount of energy you will be exerting. Energy should come predominately from slow energy release foods.

Can you buy food on DofE?
There are two types of DofE recommended expedition food: ready to eat and dehydrated. Wayfayrer expedition food is nutritious and ready to eat hot or cold. They’re small to carry, have durable packaging, and match meals you might have at home. You can pick from savoury or sweet options.
How heavy should my DofE bag be?
The first thing to do is look at the DofE Expedition Kit List and decide what’s essential and what items you could remove. For expeditions on foot, rucksacks shouldn’t weigh more than 25% of your body weight and all rucksacks must be weighed before departure.

You cannot fail a DofE Expedition. However at the end of a practice expedition we occasionally have to recommend that some groups undertake further training and practice to ensure that they are fully prepared to safely undertake an unaccompanied qualifying expedition.
What if I get my period on DofE?
What does that mean? Take plenty of pads or tampons – way more than you think you might need. It might also be a good idea to take a separate waterproof wash bag with wipes, spare underwear, lots of pads, tampons or whatever you use for your period and bags or containers to put the waste in.
