What does more teeth on a chainring do?
The number of teeth on your chainring(s) is a deciding factor in your bike’s gear ratio, with a greater number of teeth meaning a higher (harder to push) gear, and fewer teeth meaning a lower (easier to push) gear.
How is chainring spacing measured?
Just measure the distance between the CENTERS of two adjacent holes on the crank or the chainring like shown in these photos. The measurements do not need to be exact. The parts are exact, but if you just get close on the measurement, then you can find the value in the table fairly easily.
What Q-Factor is boost?
Q-factor: The Q-factor of a pedal is the distance between the two cranks (156 mm, 158 mm, 166 mm, 168 mm). Front or rear axle: The cross-axle is used for fixing the wheel, this model fits into the frame and is tightened with a screw thread integrated into the frame or with a nut.
Does chainring offset matter?
Offset moves the chainring further away from the crank and closer to the seat tube. Reducing the offset from 6mm to 3mm on a long-spindle (external bearing BB cup) crankset will result in a 52mm chainline. That’s good for fatbikes, but your chain may want to jump off the large rear sprockets with a standard rear end.
Will a smaller chainring help with climbing?
If you need easier gearing, just swap to a smaller chainring. This is good for riders who struggle with climbing, regularly ride steep terrain, or carry extra weight with bike bags. On a mountain bike, the small change of swapping from a 32t to a 30t chainring gives you gearing that is 6.7% easier.
How do I know if I need a boost chainring?
If you are running 12 speed, the clearances are so small between chain and cassette that you MUST run a boost spaced chainring with a boost spaced bike. If you don’t, the chain will “tick” on the next bigger cog when in the smallest 2-3 cogs on the cassette.
Is narrow Q factor better?
Decreasing your Q-factor, or bringing your crank arms closer together, may make you more aerodynamic, but it won’t necessarily make you faster. You may lose a significant amount of power, or stop recruiting your glutes in such a narrow position.
